Process to produce exhaust gas catalytic converters for internal combustion engines comprises a tubular casing (1) with inlet and outlet cones (2,3), a catalytically active body (4) and a compressible supporting mat (5) between the body (4) and the casing (1). The supporting mat (5) is a multi-layer fleece of ceramic fibers and is soaked in a liq. before being compressed to a minimal thickness. After assembly of the supporting mat (5) and the converter body (4), the liq. is driven out. Also claimed is a process as above where the mat (5) is packed into a flat air-tight foil bag (6). The bag (6) is evacuated and destroyed after assembly of the mat and converter body.
