The sail (1) has one or more vertical rows of apertures (4) cut out of the sail. The apertures have obturating flaps (5) which are hinged on the mast side and placed alternately on either side of the sail to be capable of opening and closing under the pressure of airflow over the inner face of the sail. Some of the flaps are opened when the wind comes from either side. Opening of the flaps allows venting of the air pressure from the inner side of the sail to the outer side (6) and creates air jets oriented towards the rear of the sail to reduce the strong turbulence existing in that zone.
