WAVEGUIDE TYPE PHOTO-SWITCH AND ITS MANUFACTURE

PURPOSE: To provide a waveguide type photo-switch which can be driven at low voltage and retain a liquid in a slit by itself and provide a manufacturing method for the photo-switch. CONSTITUTION: Regarding a waveguide type photo-switch which is manufactured by (1) forming core patterns consisting of a core 13 with almost a rectangular shape cross section and transmitting light-rays and a cladding 14 covering the core 13 and having lower refractive index than the core on a quartz substrate 1 in the way the patterns cross one another, (2) forming a groove-like slit 4 in the crossing part of the cores as to transversely cross the cores 13, and (3) pouring a liquid 5 having almost the same refractive index as that of the cores 13 in the crossing part of the cores 13; and in which light rays are reflected by shifting the liquid 5 from the core in light rays coming-in side to the core in light rays coming out side by a heating means composed of a heater 10: a quartz substrate in which the heater 10 is buried is set in the upper face of the light guiding path and the space of the slit in which the liquid 5 is poured is decompression sealed.
