PURPOSE: To provide an insertion compound based on a manganese oxide, useful as the positive active material of a lithium battery, and a method for preparing the same. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing an insertion compound based on manganese and a lithium oxide by solid-phase reacting a manganese oxide with a lithium compound, and the insertion compound prepared by the method are as follows: fine particles of a manganese oxide MnO2 -β having a specific surface below 7 m<2> /g and an average grain size below 10 μm and a powder of a lithium compound selected from among lithium oxide hydrated as necessary, hydroxide, carbonate, and nitrate are reacted together at temperatures from 150 to 500 deg.C for a time sufficient to convert the MnO2 -β into manganese having a spinel structure and lithium oxide. Therefore, by reacting them at temperatures matching the charging ratio of manganese to lithium, the composition of the insertion compound obtained and the oxidation number of the manganese can be adjusted. |
