The antenna includes a helical antenna (7) which is mounted on the main body casing of the main radio body and is formed from a helical winding. A feed is mounted on a lower part of the helical antenna to connect the helical antenna to the radio apparatus. A whip antenna (1) is used to electrically short circuit the helical antenna. The whip antenna is electrically connected to an upper part of the feed and the helical antenna, with the helical antenna disabled when the whip antenna is extended. When the whip antenna is retracted within the radio apparatus, it is in an isolated state and the helical antenna is operational.
