A device for contacting a gas with a liquid, including a chamber (10) containing different levels of perforated plates (12, 34) forming liquid trickle-down surfaces, the perforated plates (12) on one level being symmetrically arranged on either side of a feed channel (14, 32, 44) extending diametrically through the chamber, and successive levels being at an angle of 90 DEG to one another. The device is particularly useful for cleaning hydrogen sulphide in refinery or coke-oven gas.
