PURPOSE: To provide a picture processing method and its device, which can more speedily and more accurately retrieve picture data. CONSTITUTION: A person who retrieves data inputs a picture or a graphic pattern, edge information being the outline of the pattern and color information of the peripheral area of the pattern as picture retrieval information. Similarity between input information and picture data stored in a picture data file 4a is synthetically judged based on input information and feature data on picture data stored in a description file 4b, and picture data becoming a retrieval candidate is narrowed.
