The tubes 1, 2 are electrothermally welded by inserting plastic filling core(s) 8 into the corrugation troughs 7 of the tubes on both sides of the place of connection in order to form a resting surface 9 on the outer circumference of the tubes, wrapping an electric heating mat 10 round the resting surface of the filling core(s) and fusing the assembly together. A collar 12 is optionally used to provide welding pressure, and, if plastics, can remain welded to the mat 10 and tubes 1, 2. The corrugations can be parallel or helical with a single helical core 8 or sections covering at least two corrugations either side of the joint. The mat has heating wire windings 11 extending axially.
