To produce shaped components from thixotropic metal bolts in horizontal die casting machines, the oxide skin round the metal bolt is wholly scraped clear before the thixotropic metal alloy is passed into the hollow zone (68) of the mould (70), and the oxide is collected in a container (40). In scraping, removal of oxide-free and homogenous thixotropic metal alloy is minimised by taking into account the asymmetrical mechanical and thermal characteristics of the thixotropic metal bolt in relation to its longitudinal axis. Also claimed is a horizontal die casting machine. |
