PURPOSE: To form a high-quality image having no image defect such as tenon on the transfer paper even when the transfer paper differs in material type or weight. CONSTITUTION: A light emitting element 15 and a light receiving element 16 are installed at the gloss angle of 75 deg. below the conveyance path of a transfer material 5 fed to a transfer drum 7, the detection light is illuminated to the surface of the transfer material 5 to be transferred with a toner image from the light emitting element 15, the reflected light is received by the light receiving element 16 and processed by a controller 17, and the glossiness of the surface of the transfer material 5 is detected. The threshold value of the glossiness is set to 6%, for example, based on the glossiness of the type of paper known to generate the tenon of an image (transfer defect) in advance. When the glossiness or 6% or below is detected, the transfer material 5 is judged to be the type to easily generate tenon, and in order to prevent it, one or two or more electrophotographic process conditions such as the transfer bias are changed. An image defect such as tenon can be prevented regardless of the type of the transfer material 5, and a high-quality image can be formed on the transfer material 5. |
