An intra-vaginal or intra-anal sheath for use as a contraceptive and as a prophylactic for protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS. The sheath includes a portion (1) defined by a tubular membrane made of flexible material (2) and shaped to receive the male sex organ, and a portion (3) defined by a thin film (4) and designed to be held within the vagina, said portion (3) being provided with an internal scissor-like retaining assembly (6). An applicator for said sheath includes two cylindrical members (14, 15) joined together such that they can be in an inoperative released position when the "male" cylindrical member (15) is inserted into the "female" cylindrical member (14), and in an extended position when the two members are mutually locked and the second cylindrical member (15) is partially located outside the first cylindrical member (14) to enable insertion of the sheath.
