The method involves the tiles (Z) being automatically placed and fixed in a position in which they are clamped between a conveyor and pressure piece (2,3). The tiles are then conveyed through at least two spaced apart planing units (4,4'). The positions of the free ends (5a) of the planes (5) are continuously checked by optical sensors during operation. Their nominal and actual positions are compared and the result is converted into control impulses.
