Removing sulphur from waste gases contg. fly ash from combustion of coal dust

Sulphur is removed from the waste gases and fly ash generated by the combustion of fluid ash contg. fuels such as coal dust by rapidly (< 0.6s) heating the ash to its decomposition temp, spraying atomised water into the hot ash contg. gases and then cooling the gases. Also claimed is an appts. for implementing the process consisting of a divergent furnace (17) with a convergent flame accelerating nozzle (19). A whirl chamber generates a spiral air flow. The burner (3) is fitted with a fire tube (31) at the far end of which there is a water injection lance (39).
