PURPOSE: To obtain a new medicinal agent containing an interferon as an active ingredient, exhibiting an action for inhibiting a new blood vessel itself and activating and multiplying the pigment epithelial cells of the retinae, and useful for eye diseases such as central chorioretinitis. CONSTITUTION: The retinal pigment epithelial cell-multiplying agent contains preferably a natural interferon-βas an active ingredient. The natural interferonβis obtained as a human interferonβ-containing solution by subjecting an interferonβ-producing cell cultured on the surface of glass or plastics, etc., to e.g. an induction treatment using a synthetic double strand chain RNA such as Poly I:C, further subjecting the product to an ultrainduction treatment, and subsequently cultured in a culture medium for 20-48 hrs. The human interferon- containing solution is preferably concentrated and purified with a chromatography using a blue pigment-bound insoluble carrier and a metal chelate-bonded carrier. The agent is administered at a dose of 10000-10000000 units/day, preferably 1000000-6000000.
