The present invention relates to a process for the ammoxidation of saturated hydrocarbons, that is to say the conversion of alkanes to a mixture containing alpha , beta -unsaturated nitriles. More particularly, the subject of the present invention is a process for the ammoxidation of alkanes in the vapour phase in the presence of a solid catalyst whose active phase contains molybdenum and vanadium and oxygen, characterised in that the said active phase also contains at least one element chosen from manganese, zinc, cobalt, copper, lithium, sodium, potassium and silver. The present invention is more particularly suitable for the ammoxidation of propane to a mixture containing acrylonitrile and propylene.
