The present invention relates to a hydraulic shock absorber with a variable damping force comprising a cylinder (2), a piston assembly (3) including a throttled piston (7) partitioning said cylinder (2) into a first and a second cylinder chamber (5a,5b) communicating with each other via a communicating passage (17,18,21,23,24,25,26) and a valve means (31) for varying the flow resistance of the communicating passage (17,18,21,23,24,25,26).
