Variable format printing system

The printing system prints the required format and order of items and passes them to a cutting stage where the sheets/pages are separated. A collation system feeds the printed sheets into a collection point where the sheets for one item (e.g. a book) are collected and passed to the next process stage when complete. The sheets for the next item are collected on an intermediate support (60) without interrupting the print process. The printer can prepare successive items with different layouts and formats. The programmed collation system prepares the items with individual control and without interrupting the print process.
