A catheter (6) has a catheter body constructed for placement through a narrow passageway and includes a moveable cutting member (16, 18) at its distal end and controllably actuated to sever tissue deep within the body. A firing mechanism includes a ram (42) which accelerates to a high speed to actuate the cutting mechanism (16, 18) to cleanly cut the sample.
