In the method proposed, spectral values are calculated from sampled network-voltage or network-current values by discrete Fourier transform techniques. Of these spectral values, only those which are greater than a given threshold value (SW) are transmitted further or stored. In order to reconstruct the sampled values, the missing spectral values are assumed to be zero. In general, only those spectral values are transmitted further or stored which are associated with a fault and a previous and subsequent history of several seconds. The invention is suitable for use in fault recorders.
