The press has a case with a horizontally acting stamp which forces the accumulated material into a channel. A gap is formed in the inlet area of te channel between the roof the channel and the leading edge of the stamp. The gap (7) mainly has a width of more than 10mm. Individual horizontally distributed tearing elements (17) extend through the gap at some points. The elements are fastened stationary to the ceiling of the press channel. They have sharp tearing edges, which face in compressing direction. The tearing elements are offset relative to each other, in direction of compressing, and form rear retaining edges. The edges are offset relative to each other by distances, which are smaller than the thickness of the part-bales formed by one partial press stamp stroke.
