PURPOSE:To provide an automatic focusing device and a method therefor by which focusing is performed in a short time and highly accurate focusing is realized and where erroneous detection is hardly caused. CONSTITUTION:Contrast is successively obtained along a specified searching line in a specified area of a subject 11, and the distance between a microscope 13 and the subject 11 is successively changed so as to obtain a position in the specified area of the subject 11 where the contrast is maximum and a distance between the microscope 13 and the subject 11. By setting a specified area having the position in the specified area of the subject 11 where the contrast is maximum as the center, as a notice area, the distance between the microscope 13 and the subject 11 is finely moved further, and the distance between the microscope 13 and the subject 11 where the contrast is maximum is decided as a focusing position. |
