The system has one connection (11) for a gas sample holder (10), and another (15) for a standard gas container (14), with a switching arrangement (13) for selective coupling to a mass spectrometer (MS) via a common capillary tube (43). The tubing (12,16) between the connections and the switching arrangement is flushed out with gaseous He from a central supply line (25), either in its entirety or partially before, during and/or after individual measurements on the sample and standard.
