The invention concerns the use, in the solvent extraction of iron ions from aqueous solutions, of hydrocarbon-soluble aminomethylene phosphonic acid derivatives containing the structural entity (I) in which R<1> and R<2> are hydrogen, C1-C30 alkyl which may additionally carry up to 15 hydroxyl groups and/or include in the carbon chain up to 14 non-adjacent oxygen atoms, C2-C30 alkenyl, C7-C18 aralkyl or C6-C14 aryl which may be substituted by up to three C1-C12 alkyl groups, C1-C12 alkoxy groups, halogen atoms, cyano groups, hydroxyl groups or C1-C4 alkoxycarbonyl groups.
