PURPOSE:To always ensure a good printing grade by controlling the drive means of a suction means in the restoration processing function sucking ink from the ink emitting part of a recording means to restore the ink emitting capacity of the recording means on the basis of selected ink sucking quantity and suction pressure. CONSTITUTION:An ink jet recording apparatus is equipped with a restoration processing mechanism 13 for restoring the ink emitting deficiency of a recording head 2 to a good state at the position opposed to the recording head 2 but shifted from a platen 9. The restoration processing mechanism 13 has a cylinder 1302 generating suction negative pressure by the reciprocating movement of a piston 1301 and the ink sucked from a cap 1304 is discharged to a waste ink tank by the suction negative pressure and ink sucking quantity and suction pressure are selected corresponding to the kind of a recording means. The restoration processing mechanism 13 separates the cap 1304 along the inclination of a guide rail 1314 with respect to the recording head 2 by the movement of a cap guide 1312.
