A fish can be immobilised in a metal-tipped rifle type device. The rifle consists of a long body (1) with a handle (2) at one end. A plunger (10) runs the length of the body and can be moved between an armed position, back near the handle and a forward position, immobilising a fish. When released (3) from the armed position the plunger moves two connecting rods (16 and 17) attached to curved jaws (11 and 12), closing them to grip the fish just behind its head. The jaws are reopened and the plunger returned to the armed position by a manual grip (29).
