PURPOSE:To provide a method for informing a fault for which the overlapping of a fault informing cell is avoided in a multi-point ATM network. CONSTITUTION:A connecting point C1 which detects a lower layer fault sends out a first fault informing signal AIS100 to a downstream when it is not a branching point. The connecting point B1 which receives the AIS cell terminates the AIS cell when it is the branching point, sends out a pseudo fault informing signal MAIS cell substituting the AIS cell to the downstream and returns a second fault informing signal FERF200 to a connection in a reverse direction. The respective connecting points C2 and B2 on a downstream side transfer the received MAIS cell to the downstream without a processing and end point (leaves) L1 and L2 perform prescribed state transition when it is received. Only the first point B1 which receives and terminates the AIS 100 returns the FERF200 to the connection in the reverse direction.
