A toilet ventilation unit has a vacuum motor (19) mounted in a wall (21) surrounding the toilet (11) or a ceiling space (22) such as an attic. The vacuum motor (19) is connected to the back of the tank (13) and utilizes the water passageway (14, 16) of the toilet (11) to draw odors and aromas from the bowl (12). A vacuum shut off valve (27) is mounted adjacent the back of the tank (13) and is actuated concomitantly with the rising and lowering of the water level (18) to shut off the air flow from the bowl (12). An additional valve (48) is also mounted adjacent the tank (13) to act in opposition to the shut-off valve (27) and provide relief from the vacuum created from the drop of the water level (18) during flushing. A release valve (33) is adjacent the vacuum motor (19) to draw air from an air source alternative to the toilet (11), when the shut-off valve (27) is activated.
