The circuit arrangement includes an inverter (WR) fed by a DC voltage source (GL) to provide a voltage supply to at least one low pressure discharge lamp (L). A smoothing unit (G) is connected in parallel to the inverter input and comprises two electrolytic capacitors (C1,C2) connected in series with each other via one diode (D2) during charging, and in parallel via two other diodes (D1,D3) during discharge. The smoothing unit also includes a resistor (R1), which is connected in series with the two capacitors and associated diode during charging. A further capacitor (C3) is connected in parallel with this resistor and provides a bridge across the resistor for high frequency current components flowing back to the capacitors from the inverter.
