Data storage and retrieval system having a plurality of cartridges (17) removably disposed in an array (18) for transcribing data on the cartridges (17), a transport mechanism (21) movable along a predetermined path for transferring the cartridges (17) between a plurality of storage locations and a drive unit (19), and means (39, 61) for preventing ejection of a cartridge (17) from the drive unit (19) into the path of the transport mechanism (21) unless the mechanism (21) is aligned with the drive unit (19) and in position to receive the cartridge (17) upon extension of a finger (29), from the transport mechanism (21), which moves the ejection prevention means (39, 61) allowing a cartridge (17) to be ejected from the drive unit (19).
