A strongly acid cation exchange resin is produced by sulphonating a cross-linked polymer of a vinyl aromatic compound, with sulphuric acid or sulphuric acid monohydrate at 100 DEG C. to 180 DEG C. and in the presence of 5 to 30% of phosphorus pentoxide based on the mixture of sulphonating agent and pentoxide. The cross-linked polymer may be derived from styrene, methyl styrene or chlorostyrene and divinyl benzene. The products have a sulphur content of at least 18% and have a total volume capacity of at least 2.8 mval/ml. of resin. In examples the sulphonated resins are neutralized with common salt. |
