The core is mfd. of glass or pref. PMMA fibre, and the sheath of another material (e.g. fluoropolymer) having a lower refractive index and a thickness of pref. 0.1 to 15 microns. The surface of the sheath is uniformly or regionally roughened, stippled, shaped, brushed, embossed or indented by micro-mechanical or chemical treatment so as to be selectively activated for emission of light.
