A superconductive element comprising a core of niobium and a surface layer of Nb3Sn is formed by vapour depositing tin on a wire or ribbon of niobium heated to 900-1100 DEG C. The wire is maintained at temperature for a sufficient time for the deposited tin to react with the surface of the niobium to form a coating of Nb3Sn. The process may be a batch type or continuous type. An insulating layer such as a polyurethane-epoxy resin, polyesters, silicones, ceramics and epoxy resins may be applied to the Nb3Sn layer. |
