The second shaft (4) is carried in the frame (2) fastened to the vehicle body. First and second shaft are located in the same plane. The second shaft is formed by a crank (12), and the selector lever (1) is born on the crank via the first shaft (3). The selector lever has first and second active surfaces (17,8). When the lever is pivoted about the second shaft, the first surfaces engage with active surfaces of a stepping transmission unit (19), to form a first positive connection. The second active surfaces engage with third active surfaces (9) of a gear preselector, forming a second positive connection.
