The invention relates to a process for displaying text in the CGA graphic mode on a personal computer screen having on the one hand a processor and a store allocated thereto in which bit patterns of the text characters to be displayed are stored and, on the other, a video card connected to said processor via an external bus and having a video store, the content of which can be displayed on the screen. During text output, a sequence containing two bits establishing the background colour, especially 00, is generated for each subsequent pixel. The stored text character bit pattern is linked to this bit sequence so that whenever there is the bit 0 in the stored bit pattern for the pixel concerned, no change is made and whenever there is the bit 1 in the stored bit for the pixel concerned, a bit sequence containing two bits establishing the desired foreground colour is generated and stored in the video store.
