Computer-controlled battery charging unit with self-regulating feature

A computer controlled (50) battery charger suitable for recharging batteries (2) with differing numbers of cells/capacities and terminal voltages establishes the cell count by checking battery voltage (40) after a short preliminary charge at predetermined current for a preset time controlled by PWM regulation (23) of an inverter (20) and rectifier (30) subject to the current monitor resistor (3) and signal amplifiers (60). Depending on the cell count the battery is categorised in relation to the maximum capability of the charger and recharged appropriately. A fully recharged battery is confirmed by monitoring the terminal volts which peak to a maximum followed by a slight fall at which point the computer terminates the operation.
