摘要 1,024,512. Making strip material; welding by pressure; shearing; forging. GUILD METAL JOINING EQUIPMENT CO. Jan. 17, 1964 [Oct. 23, 1963], No. 2222/64. Headings B3A, B3H, B3R and B3W. [Also in Division B5] A joint for two elements such as strips or the like comprises first and second metallic ends, aligned grooves in the ends and elongated wire bridge elements deformed and welded therein bridging the strip ends. A machine for joining strip ends comprises a base 1, Fig. 1, supported on rails 2, 3 by rollers 5, 6 and 7 for movement to and from a working position and in the latter position is latched in position. On a raised portion 19, Fig. 1, of the base is mounted an anvil 20 supporting an exit clamp 24, guides 25, 26 and strip supports 27, 28 with a lower electrode 29 between the supports and on a lower portion of the base is mounted a base-plate 21 supporting an entry clamp 22 and a shear unit 23. Posts 31, 32 at the back of the base support a head assembly 33 and a wire guide and feed unit 34 respectively. Head assembly.-A horizontal frame 36, Fig. 2 (not shown), extending from the post 31 comprises vertical plates 37, 38 having a horizontal rail 39 secured to the bottom thereof and a head index carriage 42 is mounted by rollers on the rail 39 for movement therealong. The carriage, which carries a handle 64 for manual indexing, may be automatically indexed by piston-cylinder, screw etc. and carries hydraulic piston and cylinder assemblies 67, 68, 69. The piston rods 76, 78, Fig. 4 (not shown), of the outer assemblies are secured to the tops of brackets 82, 83 secured to a pressure pad 85 and the rod 77 of the control assembly is secured to holder 91 for an upper electrode 89. The electrodes may be of a tungsten or chromium molybdenum alloy or a chromium copper alloy. The pressure pad has an aperture 88 within which the upper electrode 89 is movable and has a slot 107 extending to the aperture 88 to accommodate a rod 106 movable by a pneumatic piston-cylinder device 101 fixed to the pad 85. The rod 106 is connected by a pin and slot connection to an indenting tool 111 to the underside of which is brazed an indenting insert of copper-tungsten alloy. Wire guide and feed unit.-The post 32 supports an inclined frame 130 which supports a spool 131, Fig. 3 (not shown), straighteners 132, 133 and a feed unit including a slide assembly 142 movable by a piston-cylinder assembly 150 and carrying a guide tube 158, and pivoted clamping elements 159, 160. A guide tube 164 projects from a block 145 in which it is movably mounted and a guide cable extends from the block 145 to a passage 173 in the pressure pad 85. The passage 173 terminates in a wire guide and cutter tip 175 adjacent the aperture 88. Strip shear unit.-An L-shaped frame 178, Fig. 3 (not shown), forms with the plate 21 a C-shaped frame with guide posts 180, 181 extending through sleeves 182, 183 in the top of the frame and a movable knife plate 188 connected to nuts 186, 187 secured to the posts. The plate 188 which is connected to the pistonrod 190 of a hydraulic piston-cylinder device 191 carries a spring-pressed clamp 197 and a knife 194 to co-operate with a lower knife 199. When the blade is lowered the posts 180, 181 move through lower bushings 203, 204. Operation.-The trailing end of a metal strip 215, Fig. 1, is clamped in exit clamp 24 with its end 216 on the centre of the lower electrode 29 and a leading end of a metal strip 217 is clamped in entry clamp 22 to project through the shear unit 23. The shear is actuated so that the blades 194, 199 shear the end. The strip is clamped in clamp 22 with its sheared end either abutting or spaced from the end 216. The carriage 42 is adjusted to bring the pad 85 over the strip ends, the pad is lowered and the pistoncylinder device 101 is actuated to move the indenting tool 111 into the aperture 88, now below the electrode 89. The electrode 89 is now lowered to contact the tool 111 and current is supplied from a transformer to pass through the tool 111, the strip ends and the lower electrode 29 to heat the strip ends and form a notch therein. The electrode 89 is retracted, the device 101 is actuated to withdraw the tool 111 and the wire feed device is actuated to cause the clamping elements 159, 160 to feed wire from the reel to project into the aperture 88 and into the groove in the strip ends. The electrode 89 is again lowered to co-operate with the cutter 175 to cut the wire and descends to contact the wire portion in the groove. Current is now supplied to deform and weld the wire in the groove. After retracting the electrode and pressure pad the carriage 42 is indexed along the strip joint and the operation repeated. The joint may be as shown in Fig. 15 or the ends may be inclined to the strip axis and spaced with bridging wires parallel to the strip axis or normal to the inclined ends. The grooves may have parallel sides and round or square ends or tapered sides and the grooves may be V-shaped, semicircular, rectangular or shallow arcuate in cross-section and the wires may be circular, rectangular, semi-cylindrical or triangular in section. It is stated that galvanized, painted or plastic coated metal strips may be joined and that plastic wires, e.g. polyethylene, may be sealed to polyethylene coated kraft paper strips.
