In the proposed system for monitoring the use of traffic routes and/or areas by authorized vehicles, authentication data relating to the licence numbers of authorized vehicles and the type of authorization given (duration, distance, area, single or repeated use) are established at authorization points. Monitoring systems are installed at suitable locations along the traffic routes or areas; these systems automatically recognise the licence numbers of passing vehicles and compile the monitoring data relating to the licence number which are then compared with the authorization data.
