The salt of tert-octylamine with clavulanic acid is suitable for the purification of clavulanic acid and also as an active ingredient of antibiotic preparations. A number of different methods of preparing and/or purifying clavulanic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or pharmaceutically acceptable ester thereof are described, which consist of clavulanic acid in some form or other being brought into contact, in an organic solvent, with tert-octylamine, isolating the tert-octylamine salt of clavulanic acid formed and converting the salt into clavulanic acid or a derivative thereof.
