Amine salts of olefin sulfonic acids and their preparation

A detergent composition contains as surface-active agent an amine salt of an olefin sulphonic acid having the formula wherein R1, R11 and R111 are hydrogen or the same or different alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkanol or cycloalkanol radicals, or two of them form, together with the nitrogen atom, a heterocyclic radical, provided that at least one of them is not hydrogen, and R1 or R2 is an alkyl group and the other one is hydrogen or an alkyl group. The composition may also contain a solvent, e.g. glycerol, glycol, alcohols or alkanolamines.ALSO:Novel amine salts of the formula R1CH=CR2SO3H.NR1R11R111 wherein R1, R11 and R111 are hydrogen or the same or different alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkanol or cycloalkanol radicals, or two of them form, together with the nitrogen atom, a heterocyclic radical, provided that at least one of them is not hydrogen, and R1 or R2 is an alkyl group and the other one is hydrogen or an alkyl group, are prepared by sulphonating an olefin R1CH=CHR2 with sulphur trioxide under anhydrous conditions and reacting the sulphonation product also under anhydrous conditions with an amine R1R11R111N. The sulphonation step may be carried out in the presence of an alcoholic solvent, e.g. a monohydric or polyhydric alcohol or an amine alcohol, in which case a hydroxysulphonic acid ester is produced as the intermediate sulphonation product. The amine salts are useful as surface-active agents in detergent compositions (see Division C5).
