PURPOSE:To obtain carbon fine powder for an electroviscous fluid having high resistance, high purity and finely divided state and excellent in viscosity response to the voltages impressed and long-time functional stability, and to provide the efficient process for producing the carbon fine powder. CONSTITUTION:This carbon fine powder for an electroviscous fluid is composed of soot-like fine powder having an amorphous state containing carbon cluster and has electric specific resistance of 10-10<8>OMEGAcm, a carbon content of >=99wt.% and a nitrogen-absorbing specific surface area of >=50m<2>/g. The process for producing this carbon fine powder comprises a heating and vaporization step in which a carbonaceous material is treated in a system held in an inactive atmosphere under 20-500Torr and a cooling step in which the treated carbonaceous vapor is rapidly returned to solid state. |
