In a magnetic recording medium consisting of a coherent magnetic metal thin film applied by PVD on a polymeric substrate, the novelty is that the thin film contains a noble gas (mixt.), pref. Ar, and the ratio of remanent magnetisation in the longitudinal direction to that in the transverse direction is 0.9-1.8 in the film plane. Also claimed is a process for prodn. of the above magnetic recording medium. Pref. the medium is produced by vapour depositing a magnetic metal or alloy onto a longitudinally moving polymeric substrate while directing a noble gas stream directly onto the substrate surface, the specific noble gas flow being 1.0-6.0 x 10<4>.
