[Also in Division G3] An electromechanical transducer comprises a magnetic circuit having an air gap and an armature arranged for substantially rectilinear motion within the air gap in a direction substantially normal to the lines of magnetic flux in the gap. As shown, Fig. 1, an hydraulic jet pipe valve comprises a pair of transducers 24A, 24B actuating a common armature 18 which is mounted on a resilient jet pipe 20. Each transducer comprises a soft iron core 27 carrying a coil 26 and having pole members 29, 30 defining an air gap 28. When the coil is energized the armature is drawn further into the air gap to reduce the reluctance of the gap. The transducers may be provided with bias windings and different modes of energizing the windings of the two transducers are discussed. The pipe 20 directs a jet of hydraulic fluid towards two receiver ports 22A, 22B so that a pressure differential is obtained when a control signal is applied to the coils. The nozzle 34 of the jet pipe and the receiver ports 22A and 22B are surrounded by an annular baffle 40 which protects the armature and air gaps from the hydraulic fluid. The valve assembly may form part of an hydraulic servomotor system Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). The pressure differential at the receiver ports is utilized to control the direction of movement of a spool valve the displacement of which from a neutral position determines the direction and speed of a fluid motor to which it is connected. A spring wire is connected between the spool valve and the jet pipe to provide a negative feedback loop so that when the spool valve has moved to a position proportional to the control signal applied to the transducers the forces acting on the jet pipe are balanced and the pipe returns to its central position and the movement of the spool valve ceases.</p> |
