Solid polymer is separated from solvent by subjecting the solution to a zone of reduced 'pressure thereby evaporating the solvent and precipitating the polymer, wherein the overhead vapour stream is treated to recover entrained solid polymer, the treatment comprising condensing the vapour stream by direct contact with a stream of already condensed solvent, recovering a condensed solvent stream containing entrained polymers in solid phase, and separating the solid and liquid phases. The stream of condensed solvent to be recycled is preferably passed through an external cooling means. The solution, which may be of a homo- or copolymer of a 1-olefin in a C 3 -C 12 paraffinic hydrocarbon at a concentration of 20-50% by weight of polymer, can be initially at a pressure of 100 p.s.i.g. and temperature of 100-500‹ F., and can be subjected to a reduced pressure of 5-40 p.s.i.g. The initial solution before passing into the zone of reduced pressure, may be fed through a gas liquid separator to remove unreacted monomer. An apparatus, suitable for the above process, is shown in the figure. The polymer solution leaves the reactor 10 by effluent line 18, and passes to a flash chamber 22 where solvent is removed under reduced pressure and temperature conditions. The solid polymer is removed via the conduit 28, and additionally may be stripped of solvent by the passage of steam through the conduit 29. Solvent vapours containing entrained polymer particles, pass through 26 to the condenser 30 containing a vapour-liquid contacting means 32 such as a sieve or bubble-cap trays, and packing 34 for coalescing entrained liquid droplets and these vapours are contacted with cooled condensed solvent which has been withdrawn from the lower section of the condenser column via 38, and passed through a heat exchanger 40 where it is cooled, and then returned to the column above contacting means 32. Liquid solvent is withdrawn from the bottom of the condenser via the line 48 and passed to a phase separator or other equipment for recovery of solvent. The liquid phase copolymerization of ethylene and butene, using a catalyst comprising silica-alumina impregnated with chromium oxide, is exemplified.
