In a contact probe, the conventional tubular holder for receiving the needle member and the compression coil spring is eliminated by receiving them in a through hole provided in an insulator assembly consisting of at least two layers of insulating plate members. By thus eliminating the need for a tubular holder, the effective outer diameter of the contact probe can be reduced, and the density of contact probes in a contact probe assembly including a multiplicity of such contact probes in a parallel relationship can be increased without reducing the spring force of the coil spring or the mechanical strength of the needle member of each contact probe.
