Industrial etherification of starch

Large scale prodn. of starch ethers in a reaction reservoir, is effected by reacting an aq. suspension of granular starch, with a monofunctional etherifying agent in the presence of an alkali catalyst (pref. NaOH) whilst maintaining the filterability of the starch. An aq. suspension of starch is pumped through a conduit containing devices to give a turbulent flow, in a particular transversal section of the current. Into the turbulent flow is injected an alkaline etherification catalyst, to give a uniform mixture of starch and catalyst. This mixture is then passed to the reservoir where the etherifn. pref. using ethylene oxide, is carried out.
