An improved process for extracting nucleic acids from a sample comprising the mixing of the samples with a support which is at least one element chosen from the group consisting of dextran, of polyacrylamide and of carboxymethylcellulose in order to form a liquid mixture; the mixing of this liquid with a reagent C so as to make the nucleic acids and the support insoluble, this reagent C containing at least one reagent A chosen from the group consisting of guanidinium thiocyanate, guanidinium hydrochloride, potassium thiocyanate, sodium thiocyanate and at least one reagent A chosen from the group consisting of N-propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, N-butyl alcohol, sec-butyl alcohol, tert-butyl alcohol, and tert-amyl alcohol, and the separation of the liquid phase from the nucleic acids and from the insolubilised support. The process is easier to use than the previous procedures, involves fewer stages, makes it possible to reduce the possibility of producing an aerosol, can be used in a short time interval, uses neither phenol nor chloroform, and makes it possible to obtain a constant efficiency in the extraction of the nucleic acids. A process is also described for detecting a specified sequence of a nucleic acid.
