Device for mounting cap-shaped lids on the necks of jars, bottles or the like, having means for transporting the jars in a row and having a feeding device for feeding the lids in the same conveying direction as the jars at an angle with their open end pointing in the direction of movement of the upper edges of the necks of the jars at a vertical level in which the respectively upper edge of a neck of a jar comes into contact with the front edge, in the direction of movement, of a lid which is fed in an inclined position and carries the said lid along with it concomitantly. The feeding device is held in a vertically movable fashion during operation and is adjusted to the different heights of the jars by scanning means which scan the height of the edge of each neck of a jar. This ensures that the lids are carried along concomitantly by the necks of the jars in a reliable fashion and, in addition, avoids the danger of squeezing of the lids and jars and chipping of the upper edges of the jars. <IMAGE>
