A spectrophotometer, used as detector for high pressure liq. chromatography, has (i) a light source (2) comprising an UV discharge lamp: (ii) a measurement cell (14) comprising a flow-through cell with two parallel windows (25) spaced by a spacer (26) to form a cavity (26a), the spacer thickness, which determines the absorption path length, being less than the square root of the cavity cross-sectional area; (iii) a light guide (9,10,11) between the light source (2) and photodetectors (15,17); and (iv) a sealing partition wall (21) between the light source (2) and the light guide (9,10,11) for separating explosion-free and explosion-protected spaces. USE/ADVANTAGE - Useful as a UV detector in high pressure liq. chromatography. It has a low detection limit, which is independent of refractive index fluctuations, and is simple and inexpensive to produce.
