Lettering is applied to a substrate, e.g. drawings, plans, placards, signs and signboards by causing a thin letter stencil to adhere to the substrate, applying a dye carrier over the stencil and dissolving the stencil with a solvent in which the dye carrier is insoluble. Means for carrying out the method consists of a transparent carrier foil upon which letter stencils are arranged so as to be transferable and detachable by pressure contact on a substrate. The stencils consist of a material of the thickness of a film and which is soluble in solvents, e.g. water, acids or alkaline solutions or nitrocompounds. The stencils of the type shown in Fig. 5 are so dimensioned in their surface area and their side and longitudinal edges, and the stencils of the type shown in Fig. 6 so provided with side and longitudinal edge markings on the carrier foil that the individual stencils can be applied to the substrate with a uniform spacing and in correct alignment. |
