A valve tappet device for variable lift controls, especially for inlet and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine, comprises a tappet guided on the engine side and a central tappet guided centrally therein which can be locked with the other tappet by displaceable locking pistons held spring-loaded in the initial position. In order to obtain a highly loaded spring arrangement, each locking piston is designed with a spring stop arranged at a distance in the direction of the other locking piston for the arrangement of a preloaded compression spring between the stops of the locking pistons.
